Permission to carry Zamzam does not always mean free extra baggage. Departure airport, pilgrimage status, approved packaging and the operating airline can determine acceptance. Confirm the whole return itinerary before purchasing water; one carrier’s policy does not automatically cover an onward flight.
Twelve airlines: what to check
“Confirm” means this guide does not have sufficient primary evidence to state a quota or charge. It is neither a ban nor a promise of acceptance. This list also does not guarantee route availability on any date.
| Airline | Verified starting point or required check | Still confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Emirates | Up to 5 litres additional for Hajj/Umrah itineraries including JED/MED, appropriately sealed | Partner flights and handover arrangements |
| Qatar Airways | 17 February 2026 advisory: maximum 5 kg/litres from JED/MED/TIF for Hajj/Umrah passengers, approved packaging | Whether additional carriage is free; this advisory does not establish it |
| flydubai | Up to 5 litres free in addition from JED/MED/TIF/YNB; other Saudi airports count within allowance | Government-approved packaging and your itinerary |
| Air Arabia | One 5-litre bottle free as checked baggage from Saudi Arabia with official purchase and packaging | Acceptance by onward carriers |
| Garuda Indonesia | Confirm the ticket and flight operation | Quantity, packaging and allowance treatment |
| Saudia | Confirm departure airport and terminal | Ticket conditions and terminal handling |
| Lion Air | Confirm with the flight operator | Package/charter conditions and onward travel |
| Flynas | Confirm the latest policy before purchase | Pilgrim documents, packaging and airport acceptance |
| Etihad | Confirm the entire itinerary | Origin airport and allowance calculation |
| Oman Air | Confirm with the airline | Quantity and transfer handling |
| Gulf Air | Confirm with the airline | Packaging, quantity and any charge |
| AirAsia | Identify the operating airline entity | Zamzam acceptance and separately ticketed flights |
Verified references: Emirates, Qatar Airways, flydubai and Air Arabia. Qatar’s advisory excludes carriage in the cabin or inside a checked suitcase.
Buying and handing over the bottle
Madinah Airport describes buying one 5-litre bottle with a passport and prohibits putting it inside checked luggage. Buying at the airport is separate from permission to transport it under your ticket.
Keep official packaging intact, retain purchase evidence and add identification as instructed. Ask where to hand over and collect the bottle. Do not decant it into ordinary containers or hide it in a suitcase to bypass restrictions.
Send these questions before returning
Provide flight numbers, dates, the Saudi departure airport, transfer airports and final destination. Request confirmation of quantity, volume/weight, packaging, documents, allowance treatment and whether the bottle will be tagged through. For different operators or tickets, obtain both carriers’ answers.
Save the response with your e-ticket and check tags and collection instructions at check-in. Another pilgrim’s experience from a different terminal is not enough. See the Umrah transit guide when choosing the connection.
Common questions
Does every airline allow 5 litres free?
That cannot be assumed. Permission, volume limits and exemption from the normal allowance are three separate questions for your booking.
Will paying excess guarantee acceptance?
No. Packaging or operating restrictions may prevent carriage even if you are willing to pay. Resolve acceptance before purchase.
What about an Indonesian domestic connection?
Check that flight separately, especially with a different ticket. The Surabaya Umrah guide helps assess journey structure without assuming bags are always forwarded.
